The 24hr Soccer Marathon
The soccer Marathon is a fundraiser run by Transition Year students each year in aid of St Vincent de Paul. This year the guys braved the freezing cold weather and went out and raised €16,000. All this money pays for the 184 Food Hampers made and delivered by transition year students for the St Vincent de Paul. (Click here for more)
The marathon began on Friday the 1st of December at 9am when over 60 freezing bodies made their way slowly to the soccer pitches. After about half and hour you could swear they were playing in a mud bath rather than a grass soccer pitch. (Click here for photos)
At 12pm they were given a break for lunch but the soccer restarted soon after at 1.15pm. Before being admitted to the canteen for dinner at 5pm for hygiene reasons I’m sure the guys had to have a shower. After dinner rather than suspending play due to fading light (darkness) like Wimbledon the soccer was restarted in the Jubilee hall.
After nearly 12 hours of soccer aching muscles were given a break when everyone went for a swim to regenerate themselves before the matches against the teachers at 11pm. Unfortunately the staff team of Mr Gary Sullivan, Mr Enda Whelton, Mr Ed O’Farrell, John O’Leary, John D’Arcy and Principal Mr. Alan MacGinty were victorious and beat the Transition Years in 5 of the Matches and drew 3.
By Midnight everyone was low on energy so pizzas were ordered in and demolished.
For the rest of the night people played soccer, went swimming and slept! (Of Course they all claimed they didn’t). |
