Clean Up With Tidy Towns

4th September 2007

Blackrock College / Blackrock Village Tidy Towns Committee Day of Action

Tuesday December 4th 2007

Marie Baker from the Blackrock Village Tidy Towns Committee asked if we would tackle the graffiti and litter and general untidiness of the public car-park beside the Catholic church.
She arranged with DLR Council a supply of gloves, litter bags, litter pickers and a graffiti  removal kit.

Mr. J. Daly and thirteen students from the College walked down to meet her on Tuesday morning and proceeded to collect all the litter in the shrub beds surrounding the car-park. Amongst the large items collected was a car battery, a hubcap and a fence post.
The end wall of the car-park had been extensively covered in graffiti on a rough dash surface and our efforts at dissolving it were only partially successful. However we were able to remove graffiti from the litter bins on the pathway beside the car-park and on the barrier at the entrance.

The shrubs shielding the car-park from the road had become overgrown and full of brambles. We felt that this was the responsibility of DLR Council parks department but we did spend over an hour trimming back the worst of the brambles. DLR Council agreed to collect the litter bags the following day and have done so. However the compostable cuttings are still there as I write on Friday 7th and we will contact them to find out if the Parks dept. will follow up on our work

The car-park and its surroundings look much better and we feel that we have made some small contribution to supporting the well-being of our local environment. Have a look at the photographs of the day’s work.
